As you can see by my recent blog post, juicing is not for me. I thought I would try it but in the end I prefer to go to my neighborhood juice bar.
Here are the seven main things to consider before you start doing your own juicing:
1) Time is money, it's sometimes worth the few extra bucks to pick up a fresh-made juice at a health bar or store than to spend the time buying, cleaning, cutting the fruits and veggies and then making your own juice.
2) Cleaning the juicer is one of the worst chores in the world. It's time-consuming. And it's almost impossible to clean the strainer.
3) Beets and pomegranates are a mess. They stain your hands, knives, counters, walls -- anything you touch -- red, so be aware of this when planning to juice at home.
4) Unless you are sure of what goes with what and how much to add to the mix, the juice will come out tasting terrible. A little ginger goes a long way. Kale mixed with onion is not a good thing.
5) Veggies and fruit are two diffent things. Fruit is very high in sugar, but you need just the right amount to sweeten the drink, but if not done right, you are defeating the whole purpose by overdoing it with sugar.
6) Shopping is a big issue as the fruits and veggies don't last long and you'll be shopping constantly to keep up with the supply. Also it takes a lot of fruits and veggies to make juice, so you do need to purchase a lot of the items and store them.
7) The whole process from start to finish is time-consuming. Are you prepared for this commitment? If yes, then welcome to home juicing. If no, then see you at the juice bar!
