Joining Forces: Pepperdine University and On Focus

Today, many coaches, athletic departments, and teams face the challenge of keeping their APR (Academic Progress Rates) above 925, with the bulk of the responsibility falling on the coaches to ensure student success.  Coach Tom Asberry, from Pepperdine University, summarizes his challenge as follows: “Our APR (Academic Progress Rates) is an inherited disaster, and we’re doing everything we can to remain focused on our number one goal:  to help students graduate.”

The non-profit organization On Focus (Fostering Opportunities and Career Utilizing Sport) is providing innovative ways to assist colleges and universities with a common need: increasing Academic Progress Rates (APR).

On Focus is now partnering with universities, such as Pepperdine, to provide relief to coaches and athletic departments.

On Focus assists in ...
-Increasing Academic Progress Rates
-Developing and enhances alumni base.
-Helping student-athletes complete graduation requirements;
-Attracting and retaining highly qualified students; and
-Providing continual follow-up services for athletes while in school and after they leave the institution.

These critical services provided by On Focus come at a time when the NCAA is strictly holding athletic departments and coaches accountable for their actions and the success of their students.

Coach Asberry states that at Pepperdine, “we are making every effort to increase our APR score  by recruiting players who can perform academically, monitoring them very carefully, and providing academic counseling.”

To succeed in this on-going challenge, Pepperdine chose to partner with On Focus to provide more comprehensive services to their student athletes and strengthen their athletic program, while increasing their APR.

The mission of On Focus is to enhance the developmental success of individuals by delivering the core principles (Education, Support, Planning, Exit, Preparation, and Progress) of transition to athletes who are members of the global community of sport.

To learn more about the unique services offered through On Focus, or to establish a partnership with your institution, visit the
website at www.onfocus.org or email info@onfocus.org.

Briarcliffe College Names Head Baseball and Softball Coaches

The Office of Athletics at Briarcliffe College has named Ed Jusino its new head coach of baseball and his daughter, Lisa Jusino, head coach of softball. “Ed Jusino and Lisa Jusino have demonstrated their leadership abilities and Briarcliffe College is pleased they each decided to assume the additional responsibilities as head coaches,” said Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr.

Ed Jusino, from East Meadow, NY, was drafted out of high school to play for the Chicago Cubs but decided to attend New York University on a baseball scholarship instead.  Since 1983 he has coached softball and baseball teams.  In 2006, he joined Briarcliffe College as head softball coach.

Jusino has been recognized as athlete and coach many times: named to the 2010 Amateur Softball Association (the national governing body of softball) Hall of Fame, the 2008 Men’s Senior Baseball League National Hall of Fame and in 2007, member of the group’s Long Island Hall of Fame.  He has ranked in the Long Island Athletics Baseball Championships five times and in 1999 earned distinctions in the following:  Fire & Ice Softball National Championship, Athletes International Softball in Australia (Assistant Coach) and National HS Softball Championship in Hawaii (Head Coach).

Following in her father’s footsteps, Lisa Jusino excelled in the game of softball.  As an undergraduate at Adelphi University she was a three-time captain and four-season starter for the University’s softball team. She was also a member of the Puerto Rico National team and played on the USA Athletes International softball team in Australia in 2001.  For five years she served as an assistant coach at Adelphi University and in 2006, joined Briarcliffe College as an assistant softball coach.  In 2009 she was inducted to the Adelphi University’s Hall of Fame.

“Under the guidance of Ed Jusino and Lisa Jusino, Briarcliffe College qualified to participate in the 2010 USCAA Softball National Championships and the 2010 USCAA Baseball National Championships,” said Gina D’Amaro, Director of Athletics at Briarcliffe College.  “We brought home the Baseball Championship trophy and our team’s Reggie Smith was named Tournament MVP.”

Ed Jusino is active with the Briarcliffe campus community and beyond, encouraging his three children by his own example to give back through involvement with nonprofit causes.  He and his daughter Lisa participate in the annual America Cancer Society’s Relay For Life and actively support the Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation. Lisa Jusino also finds time to support the Guide Dog Foundation and to volunteer as instructor of 8- to 18-year olds in various softball camps and clinics.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Tabs My Sports Dreams as Fundraising Partner

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference announced today that it has named My Sports Dreams as an official fundraising partner. Specializing in working with college and scholastic athletic programs nationwide, My Sports Dreams will provide Jayhawk member teams with the ability to raise significant sums of money for operating expenses without requiring student-athletes to sell products.

Organized in 1923, the Jayhawk Conference is one of the NJCAA’s most prolific. Its 19 member institutions have won more than 100 National Championships in 12 different sports, and hundreds of former Jayhawk athletes have gone pro in their respective sports.

“The KJCCC is the home of some of the best competition at the junior college level, but like most small schools, our members have been hit hard by the state of the economy,” said KJCCC Commissioner Bryce Roderick. “We feel that My Sports Dreams will help our programs continue to run at a high level and make our conference one of the best in the nation.”

My Sports Dreams is already familiar to many athletic programs in the Jayhawk State. Both the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association and the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches endorse the company and its “product-less” approach to raising money.

"Community college athletics may not have the ‘big-time’ rep of their NCAA counterparts, but those programs are just as vital to the development of student-athletes,” said Tom Hess, Vice President of Sales at My Sports Dreams. “We’re looking forward to helping the teams of the KJCCC and the outstanding young men and women attending these institutions.”

Recruit U Helps Athletes Make The Team

Recruit U Helps Athletes Make the Team

www.recruitu.com simplifies college sports recruiting process

With a team of athletes who were overlooked by big universities, Appalachian State University’s win over nationally-ranked football powerhouse University of Michigan proves that successful teams can be built without hefty recruiting budgets.

Recruit U has launched a new college sports recruiting website to help college coaches identify talented players and to make it easier for athletes to market themselves to sports recruiters. The site – www.recruitu.com – encompasses 26 different sports and is free to all college and university scouts and recruiters. It is designed for male and female athletes who hope to play at the collegiate level.

"Despite their talent, most athletes don’t get the attention of college recruiters – they never get the chance to prove their value," says Mike Popovec, president & CEO of Fort Worth, Texas-based Recruit U LLC. "Recruit U helps athletes increase their exposure to college coaches, giving athletes their best chance at making a college team."

At the same time Recruit U helps athletes, it also makes it easier for colleges and universities to identify the best prospects for their sports programs. By using Recruit U, small and mid-size schools can compete with large universities that have hefty recruiting budgets.

"Not every college has a recruiting budget to help their coaches look beyond their own region for quality athletes," Popovec says. "For non-revenue producing sports like volleyball and golf, the process is even more difficult. Recruit U helps college coaches create the perfect team and streamlines the recruiting process – one that has traditionally been inefficient and costly. With Recruit U, coaches have the opportunity to overcome the geographic and financial boundaries that have prevented them from finding the best talent for their teams."

RECRUITING IS A SNAP

Recruit U offers a unique service to both athletes and recruiters and should not be confused with social networking sites like MySpace.com®, Facebook or Takkle. Unlike these sites, Recruit U provides a safe and secure environment for athletes to post profiles, photos and game footage. This information is accessible only to college coaches and recruiters, who can easily find athletes by name or by searching Recruit U’s athlete database using criteria such as weight, position played or location.

"Social networking sites can be a lot of fun for athletes, but they’re not the best way to get the attention of college recruiters," Popovec stresses, adding that the content on these sites might help athletes make new friends but doesn't help them connect with recruiters.

Recruit U also sets itself apart from other college recruiting sites. "While other sites focus almost exclusively on football and men’s basketball, Recruit U believes other team and individual sports such as swimming, wrestling and volleyball are just as important," says Recruit U COO Jennifer Duell. "And, we are equally and passionately committed to recruiting for women’s sports."

Subscribing to Recruit U allows athletes to create personal player profiles for 26 different sports. Each profile contains athlete information including high school, SAT and ACT scores, GPA, height and weight, sports statistics, a personal bio, photo and several video highlights. Most importantly, each profile will be tailored to the sport(s) the athlete plays, making the site user friendly for both athletes and recruiters.

Coaches and recruiters must register with Recruit U to gain access to the company’s national database of high school and junior college athletes. The registration process is very simple, and every coach who registers on Recruit U will be verified by a Recruit U team member to ensure privacy for athletes and recruiters. Recruit U has already pre-registered more than 20,000 college coaches across the U.S.

Once recruiters have registered and gone through the verification process, they can view player profiles free of charge and can perform specialized searches to aid them in finding the perfect player for their program. For example, a volleyball coach from California can log on to Recruit U and search for athletes who are taller than 5'10'' with a GPA of 3.4 or higher.

Coaches even have the luxury of creating and downloading a virtual roster of athletes, and they can contact athletes directly through the Recruit U site as long as they follow NCAA and NAIA recruiting guidelines.

"Many universities spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to create the same technology that Recruit U provides to coaches for free," Popovec points out. "Recruit U evens the playing field for recruiters who lack a sophisticated, efficient recruiting process."

Aside from the advanced search functionality, Recruit U’s site offers editorial content on topics ranging from baseball pitching techniques to tips for parents to help their child through the recruiting process.

FREE 15-DAY TRIAL

To celebrate the launch of www.recruitu.com, Recruit U is offering a 15-day free trial to all athletes who visit the site and complete their profiles. Recruiters will have access to the profiles during the free trial period.

And, all athletes who purchase a six or 12-month subscription plan will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a free iPhone®. Details of the promotion are available on www.recruitu.com.

"College sports recruiting doesn't have to be a frustrating process – for athletes or coaches," Popovec says. "By bringing coaches and athletes together, Recruit U is building winning teams."

North River Films CEO Rick DiGregorio who brings background both in film production and sports to High School Athlete Spotlight (www.hsathletespotlight.com), said he expanded his services to include boys and girls lacrosse based on requests from athletes in one of the region’s  fastest  growing sports.

Additionally, he was the co-creator and supervising producer, writer and director of the NESN program, “Be A Bruin,” which profiled the quest of 36 hockey players who sought to become members of the Boston Bruins. “As more athletes are playing lacrosse and vying for the attention of college coaches their presentation becomes more important,” said DiGregorio.  “Lacrosse is such a fast moving and physical contact sport that is it can be difficult to achieve a great video that really demonstrates the skills and talents of an individual athlete.”

He added, “We understand how important a step this is for the high school student who has his or her aspirations set on playing college sports. They very often have one shot at getting a coach’s attention and our knowledge of what coaches  look for and our film expertise help athletes to really showcase their skills.”

The other side of mediocre Another divsion 1 college sports article

The other side of mediocre another division 1 college sports.

#88: Western Michigan
Schedule strength: 79
Roster strength: 107
Overall potential: 62

The short on the Broncos:

Western Michigan can score, but still has a long way to go on defense. Senior quarterback Alex Carder is a very good offensive leader, and has come a long way in cutting down on mental mistakes. His go-to players will likely be running backs Tevin Drake and Brian Fields, and receiver Darrin Duncan and Justin Collins. And there are several freshmen receivers that may see time as well. The big question on how far the Broncos go this season is how well the defense responds. One of the worst last year, new defensive coordinator Rich Nagy has a lot of holes to fill.

#87: Hawaii
Schedule strength: 73
Roster strength: 85
Overall potential: 90

The short on the Warriors:

Norm Chow will once again go with the pro-style offense even though there isn't a quarterback set in stone. Receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann is the one bright spot on offense. A lot of unproven talent makes up the rest of the offense. Over on defense, a few holes need to be addressed, but several returners on defense are back and the overall strength is adequate at best. The Warriors will struggle unless the team melds fast.

#86: Minnesota
Schedule strength: 90
Roster strength: 72
Overall potential: 84

The short on the Gophers:

Big Ten play is what hurts the Gophers every year. A lot of elite teams at the top kills Minnesota year in and year out. And that won't be any different this year. Inconsistent play by the defense last season must improve this season, and a non-existant running game on offense and no star power players leave too many questions to answer.

#85: Louisiana-Lafayette
Schedule strength: 85
Roster strength: 95
Overall potential: 63

The short on the Rajun Cajuns:

A brutal schedule and a young roster spell the potential for a long season. But on the bright side, second year head coach Mark Hudspeth took the team to a bowl in his first season. So the Cajuns have the inspiration and pieces in place on offense. The lone weak link on offense is tight end. The bad: The defense is very green and is why Louisiana-Lafayette will fall backwards this campaign.

#81-84:
From good to bad
#84: Marshall
Schedule strength: 78
Roster strength: 67
Overall potential: 97

The short on the Herd:

Marshall has a suspect offense and defense that will doom the Herd if the holes aren't plugged. The good news is that the quarterback, running backs, and receivers are all back. The bad news is everyone else is green or has had limited playing time. The offensive line must get stronger to allow the plays to develop. And the same can be said about the defense. Marshall allowed opposing offenses to score at will and had to play catchup last season. There needs to be more aggressive play on both sides of the ball if Marshall is to sneak into a bowl this year.

#83: San Diego State
Schedule strength: 65
Roster strength: 97
Overall potential: 74

The short on the Aztecs:

Second year head coach Rocky Long caught everyone by surprise last season with an 8-5 record. But there is trouble brewing this season. Graduation cost the Aztecs their best quarterback ever, Ryan Lindley, and the two QBs on the roster have had little play time. There are a couple big names on offense: tight end Gavin Escobar and receiver Osmond Nicholas. Graduation also decimated the defensive front line with only one returning starter. The Aztecs will need to come out of the gate ready to play if San Diego State wants a return trip to a bowl this season.

#82: Iowa State
Schedule strength: 67
Roster strength: 87
Overall potential: 81

The short on the Cyclones:

A weak roster and a questionable defense, especially against the elite schools of the Big Twelve, remain two sticking points for Iowa State. It will be another subpar season for the Cyclones.

#81: Boston College
Schedule strength: 70
Roster strength: 63
Overall potential: 101

The short on the Eagles:

Boston College has been on the slide the past few years and repeated bad calls and misuse of talent by the coaching staff leads one to wonder if this years squad really stands a chance. BC brought in another new offensive coordinator, Kevin Rogers, the 4th in two years, to fix matters. The Eagles will have three wide receivers, Colin Larmond, Bobby Swigert, and Alex Amidon, as the main targets on offense this year. But a weak front line and a defense that couldn't stop anything last season will spell trouble this year.

#77-80:
Still some questions
#80: Kentucky
Schedule strength: 75
Roster strength: 62
Overall potential: 96

The short on the Wildcats:

Kentucky took a step backwards last season under Joker Phillips and without a proven quarterback this season the Wildcats will be taking another step backwards. Play in the strongest conference will not be in Kentucky's favor either. Holes on defense will prove costly as the Wildcats will struggle this year.

#79: Syracuse
Schedule strength: 82
Roster strength: 65
Overall potential: 83

The short on the Orange:

Syracuse went from a contender to a pretender as last season unfolded. And the outlook this year is bleak. Holes that sprung up on both the offensive and defensive lines last year have not been addressed. There are several quality players on the roster that could shine, if given the opportunity. But who will be the starting quarterback? Syracuse will struggle in their final year in the Big East.

#78: Temple
Schedule strength: 54
Roster strength: 76
Overall potential: 94

The short on the Owls:

A couple new faces on the offensive coaching staff leave a question mark on team preparedness. The go to players will be running back Matt Brown, tight ends Cody Booth and Wyatt Benson, as well as wide receiver Deon Miller. The defense doesn't have any star power, and had to be rebuilt due to graduations costing the d-line 6 starters from a year ago. How the Owls come together remains to be seen.

#77: Wake Forest
Schedule strength: 77
Roster strength: 69
Overall potential: 78

The short on the Deacons:

Somehow Wake Forest has found ways to salvage a season and make it to a bowl the past few years. Slow starts to a season and playing catchup to end the season seems to be the trend with the Deacons. Quarterback Tanner Price came on strong last season to send the Deacons to a bowl last year. He is back as is wide receiver Chris Givens, who will once again be Price's main target. Expect another so-so year.

#73-76:
No team chemistry
#76: Washington State
Schedule strength: 99
Roster strength: 55
Overall potential: 68

The short on the Cougars:

The good. Washington State has a good, but not great, overall roster. The bad. Playing in what may be a tough Pac 12 this season. The Cougars also need to come ready to play. In too many games last season, they either collapsed or never showed up at all. Who will be the team leader? Three quarterbacks are on the roster and not one has shown it wants the leader role.

#75: East Carolina
Schedule strength: 74
Roster strength: 73
Overall potential: 75

The short on the Pirates:

Winning the big games remains a number one priority for East Carolina. The Pirates have beaten the schools they were expected to win against, but East Carolina is still not ready for prime time against the big boys. Another issue is who will lead their offense. A new and unproven quarterback is one huge sticking point.

#74: Mississippi
Schedule strength: 87
Roster strength: 40
Overall potential: 93

The short on the Rebels:

Can we say "ditto"? A good but not great roster, mixed in with a brutal conference schedule, this time the SEC. Enter new head coach Hugh Freeze, brought in to help get the Rebels out of a long conference winless slump. But without the explosiveness that define most other SEC schools on offense, plus having no star power.

#73: Colorado
Schedule strength: 91
Roster strength: 36
Overall potential: 89

Wood Bats Or Metal Stats? One Father's Perspective

The entire issue of wood bats and the safety of our children goes before the California State Legislature in just a few weeks.  California’s North Coast Sectional baseball authority (NCS) has made it clear in a recent ruling that player’s statistics are more important than the safety of our youth. Performance at any cost is a pervasive mindset that had previously helped to justify the use of steroids, HGH and in some sectors, high tech metal bats. Some of these bats have names such as Voodoo, Stealth and are described in the latest popular baseball catalogue:  “the ball just soars off this bat. It feels like you’re swinging a toothpick and looks sick”.

The effect is clear to the professional and the layperson – anyone in attendance sees and hears the difference. MLB baseball prefers wood at every level of the sport and bans non-wood bats due to enhanced performance and risk of injury. Enhanced stats are no excuse to sacrifice the safety of our young players.

In reading the accounts of that NCS meeting, it appears that the decision was also based upon not wanting to change the rules in the middle of the season. Why would this be an argument if there were no difference in performance, as many of the Directors so stated? There is also the issue of cost.  My son, who is a teammate of a recently injured Marin Catholic High School player, states that at least for his team, they may go through about 10 bats for the season.

A player may spend several hundred dollars on a metal bat, which could easily pay for 3 or more wooden versions. I know you can argue that a metal bat will last several seasons but that is not always the case, as the boys will often replace as newer and better models are released – or the old ones are damaged.  The fact is that a wooden bat is far more inexpensive than a metal bat.  Replacing numerous wooden bats over the course of several seasons will almost never add up to the cost of just one metal bat.

It could also be argued that a change would not be fair to anyone who made a recent purchase of a metal bat, then being denied the chance to use it.  My response to all this is that the additional costs (as some contend) and inconvenience in helping to reduce the risk of injury is insignificant. One could also come up with numerous cost analogies, such as the cost of placing an airbag in a car or wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. The risks and costs must be balanced.

Believe what you want, but there is a profound, documenatable and statistical basis evidencing the risk of injury when using a metal bat.  The entire bat is a so-called sweet spot and the trampoline effect drives the ball faster and more frequently. Our children are being injured, seriously and sometimes killed - by that same driving force from the bat. The extra speed allows for little or no reaction time.

God bless high school student Gunnar Sandberg as he continues his recovery from a horrible head injury. Let us hope that the NSC will at some point reconsider its decision, or that laws are implemented to force the protection of our players.

California is advancing legislation that would require a temporary metal bat ban in the state. AB 7, sponsored by Assemblyman Jared Huffman, comes before the State Legislature in the next few weeks.  It would implement a temporary ban on non-wood bats to allow further time to study the effects, injuries, alternatives and safety standards.  I urge you to support this bill.  The health and safety of our players is at stake.  Every day, further injuries occur.  Gunnar’s injury is a compelling reminder of what the status quo can bring.

YES Network To Present Special College Basketball Telecast of Fordham Vs. Villanova on Dec. 19

The YES Network will present a special men’s college basketball telecast on Saturday afternoon, December 19, featuring the Atlantic 10’s Fordham University Rams vs. the 2009 NCAA Final Four participant Villanova University Wildcats from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  Airtime on YES is 2:00 PM.

Fordham-Villanova will be the first game of YES’ unique day-night college-NBA basketball doubleheader, as the network will televise the New Jersey Nets game against the world champion Los Angeles Lakers at 8:00 PM, also from the Izod Center, in the nightcap.

Twenty-three year old Ryan Ruocco, a 2008 Fordham graduate, will deliver the play-by-play of the Villanova-Fordham game while Jim Spanarkel, YES’ Nets analyst, will handle the color commentary.  Ruocco also handles in-booth statistics for YES’ telecasts of New York Yankees home games and joins current Yankees voice Michael Kay and former Nets voice and current Lakers voice Spero Dedes as Fordham alumni who have handled play-by-play duties on YES.

About the teams…

Fordham will be led into the fray by interim head coach Jared Grasso, who took over the helm of the Rams when Dereck Whittenburg was released from his contract after a 1-4 start. Fordham scored a convincing 93-77 home win against Stony Brook on Tuesday.  The Rams were buoyed by the outstanding performance of Palisades Park, N.J. product Chris Gaston’s 25 points and 11 rebounds -- his fifth straight double-double – which helped Grasso, a Syosset, N.Y. native, secure his first head coaching victory.

Big East power Villanova, ranked #3 in the country, will provide a formidable foe for Fordham. The Wildcats are 8-0 this season under head coach Jay Wright, including wins against Dayton, LaSalle, Penn and Maryland. Villanova is led by senior guard Scottie Reynolds, who poured in 25 points in the team’s most recent victory against Maryland on Sunday.

About the Broadcasters…

Ruocco honed his skills at Fordham’s WFUV Radio, where he received the prestigious Marty Glickman Award for play-by-play excellence as a senior. The Fishkill, N.Y. native is now an update anchor for 1050 AM ESPN Radio in New York, and has handled the radio play-by-play for National Invitation Tournament basketball games and for the CBS College Sports Network. In addition to his statistics work for YES during the Major League Baseball season, Ruocco also hosts in-stadium video features at Yankee Stadium. Ruocco is another in the long line of Fordham/WFUV products in sports broadcasting which starts with the legendary Voice of the Dodgers, Vin Scully, and also includes YES Network’s Yankees voice Michael Kay, play-by-players Mike Breen (Knicks), Bob Papa (Giants), Chris Carrino (Nets), Spero Dedes (Lakers) and Charlie Slowes (Nationals).

Spanarkel, originally from Jersey City, N.J, has been a Nets television color analyst for 19 seasons.   He is also an analyst on CBS Sports’ men’s basketball regular season and NCAA tournament coverage. While playing basketball at Duke, he earned All-American honors in 1979, was team MVP his final three seasons, and was team captain his last two seasons.  He was named East Regional Most Outstanding Player in the 1978 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and graduated from Duke in 1979.  He played professionally for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Dallas Mavericks.
