Briarcliffe College Names Head Baseball and Softball Coaches

The Office of Athletics at Briarcliffe College has named Ed Jusino its new head coach of baseball and his daughter, Lisa Jusino, head coach of softball. “Ed Jusino and Lisa Jusino have demonstrated their leadership abilities and Briarcliffe College is pleased they each decided to assume the additional responsibilities as head coaches,” said Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr.

Ed Jusino, from East Meadow, NY, was drafted out of high school to play for the Chicago Cubs but decided to attend New York University on a baseball scholarship instead.  Since 1983 he has coached softball and baseball teams.  In 2006, he joined Briarcliffe College as head softball coach.

Jusino has been recognized as athlete and coach many times: named to the 2010 Amateur Softball Association (the national governing body of softball) Hall of Fame, the 2008 Men’s Senior Baseball League National Hall of Fame and in 2007, member of the group’s Long Island Hall of Fame.  He has ranked in the Long Island Athletics Baseball Championships five times and in 1999 earned distinctions in the following:  Fire & Ice Softball National Championship, Athletes International Softball in Australia (Assistant Coach) and National HS Softball Championship in Hawaii (Head Coach).

Following in her father’s footsteps, Lisa Jusino excelled in the game of softball.  As an undergraduate at Adelphi University she was a three-time captain and four-season starter for the University’s softball team. She was also a member of the Puerto Rico National team and played on the USA Athletes International softball team in Australia in 2001.  For five years she served as an assistant coach at Adelphi University and in 2006, joined Briarcliffe College as an assistant softball coach.  In 2009 she was inducted to the Adelphi University’s Hall of Fame.

“Under the guidance of Ed Jusino and Lisa Jusino, Briarcliffe College qualified to participate in the 2010 USCAA Softball National Championships and the 2010 USCAA Baseball National Championships,” said Gina D’Amaro, Director of Athletics at Briarcliffe College.  “We brought home the Baseball Championship trophy and our team’s Reggie Smith was named Tournament MVP.”

Ed Jusino is active with the Briarcliffe campus community and beyond, encouraging his three children by his own example to give back through involvement with nonprofit causes.  He and his daughter Lisa participate in the annual America Cancer Society’s Relay For Life and actively support the Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation. Lisa Jusino also finds time to support the Guide Dog Foundation and to volunteer as instructor of 8- to 18-year olds in various softball camps and clinics.
